enCity has been collaborating with Agritecture in an agri food hub masterplan, and we were fortunate enough to hear from Mr. Henry Gordon-Smith, CEO and Founder of Agritecture, during his visit to Singapore this past week. Henry gave us a brief rundown on his journey into the urban farming industry, and his many insights on urban agriculture.

Urban agriculture is largely site specific, and dependent on many factors which include the local environment, climate conditions, typology, desired outcomes and output. Henry’s presentation gave us a deeper understanding of the details that go into planning for urban agriculture, as well as a reminder of the big picture—the need for local food production and overall low profitability of the agricultural industry.

It is also important to note that different cities have different urban agriculture needs, which are not limited to local food production, but also community benefit, building resilience as well as improving environmental conditions, all of which we as urban planners at enCity consider to ensure urban agriculture is effectively employed in our solutions.

Aside from deciding on the type of urban farm, urban farmers need to consider not just the types of plants to grow, but also their input costs including water, labour, heating and cooling amongst and how this affects their output and profitability, which was well depicted by Agritecture’s digital software for planning urban farms.

enCity is greatly invested in contributing to the agri food industry, as the interest in urban food production and food security issues in cities continues to grow. We look forward to implementing more of our research and solutions towards a more sustainable future.
