Sharing session: “The rehabilitation of the socialist collective living quarter in Hanoi”

On May 21, 2021, enCity held an internal sharing session with guest speaker Architect Bui Phuong Ngoc to share the approach of her Master thesis in Architecture and Preservation at POLIMI (Italia) in 2017.
After doing field research at Nguyen Cong Tru dormitory (Hanoi), built in 1963 following Russian building rules, Phuong Ngoc found that this area had unique architecture with rich historical background. However, this living quarter was seriously degraded, with double population density (with 9,300 people living in 2017). Therefore, she initiated the idea of reviving Nguyen Cong Tru collective living quarter into an urban heritage & architectural morphology, with an architectural form that strongly connects with the neighbourhood and landmark.

“History of place – not nostalgia of moment” (quoted British architect Cedric Price), Phuong Ngoc concluded. Thanks Phuong Ngoc for the interesting sharing session with enCity.
