enCity was honoured to receive awards for three projects at the 7th Singapore Institute of Planners (SIP) Planning Awards on 16 September. Three projects were: Ho Chi Minh City Highly Innovative and Interactive District (HIID) – SILVER, Ben Tre Strategic Vision Plan & North Da Lat District – SPECIAL MENTION.

The awards, held in Singapore and live-streamed for overseas viewers, have become an international event among planning firms in Asia with participants from countries with established planning practices such as China and Australia and projects from all over the world, as far as Rwanda and Turkey.

Ho Chi Minh City Highly Innovative and Interactive District (HIID) – Silver

In the category of Excellence in Planning > 5000ha, enCity and Sasaki’s Highly Interactive & Innovative District (HIID) was awarded Silver, for its fresh planning ideas, stakeholder engagement and functionality across multiple scales to promote connectivity, innovation, glocal characteristics, wellness, resilience and sustainable development. This international award is the second for HIID, which also won Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas Awards 2020.

In order to create an innovative and highly interactive urban area on the basis of three existing eastern districts, enCity and Sasaki’s proposal was to focus resources on two development belts for Innovation and Production, linked by three transportation axes and an on-demand transit system connected to Metro No. 1.

The transformation of an already developed area into a smart and innovative city is a challenge. The judges highly appreciate the project’s fresh planning ideas which were developed in cooperation with stakeholders, and function at multiple scales to promote connectivity, innovation, glocal characteristics, wellness, and resilient & sustainable development.

The plan established innovation hotspots linked to three innovative clusters, located on the intersections of the two development belts and three transportation axes, forming an integrated creative ecosystem. The judges cited that this is a well-presented project which will serve for implementing the proposal on ground.

Ben Tre Strategic Vision Plan – Special Mention

In the same category, enCity and Roland Berger’s Ben Tre Strategic Vision Plan was awarded a Special Mention for its emphasis on the province’s strengths and assets, its climate resilience and water management strategy, and its sensitivity to the unique and diverse settlement morphologies while creating new growth opportunities. This result is thanks to the cooperation between enCity and Roland Berger to transform Ben Tre into a green livable city that harmonizes development with nature, with a sustainable economic development based on the existing agricultural strengths of the city.

The judges recognized enCity and Roland Berger’s strategic solutions in spatial development, land use and infrastructure planning and climate change adaptation. The Planning emphasizes on the province’s strengths and assets, its climate resilience and water management strategy, and its sensitivity to the unique and diverse settlement morphologies while creating new growth opportunities.

In addition, the plan addresses a significant number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is well presented with good graphics, cited the judges.

North Dalat District – Special Mention

In the category of Excellence in Urban Design, Placemaking and Public Space, enCity’s North Dalat District was awarded a Special Mention, for its use of the natural topography to create a unique urban environment that thrives in tandem with the natural ecological and hydrological system of the site, while being sensitive to its existing context, respecting local identity and heritage and creating harmony between new and old. This project also won Future Project of the Year at the Ashui Awards 2020.

With the vision of celebrating local heritage and healing nature, North Dalat District is a project that strikes a balance between environmental preservation, cultural awareness, and economic development.

The project was awarded for its use of the natural topography to create a unique urban environment that thrives in tandem with the natural ecological and hydrological system of the site, while being sensitive to its existing infrastructure, respecting local identity and heritage and creating harmony between new and old. The judges cited that the plan proposes new buildings of scale that are sensitive to the existing low-rise buildings. It also interweaved the circulation and public space network into the steep valley-like land profile.

The project also focuses on restoring lost natural elements such as waterways, natural lakes and native pine forests, carried out with much respect to the heritage and the local identity.

North Da Lat District Master Plan
